# What Is a Sales Battle Card?

A sales battle card is a concise, internally-facing reference document that equips sales reps with the specific information they need to position their product effectively against a named competitor — in real time, during a live sales conversation. A battle card is not a marketing brochure. It is a tactical tool: direct, opinionated, and built around the objections, comparisons, and competitive moves a rep is most likely to encounter in a deal where a specific competitor is present.

## What a Battle Card Contains

A well-built battle card is typically one to two pages — dense enough to be comprehensive, short enough to be actually read and used. The best ones are designed so a rep can scan them in five minutes before a call and walk in knowing exactly how to handle the competitive conversation.

**Competitor overview.** A brief, honest summary of what the competitor does well, who they sell to, and what their core positioning is. A battle card that dismisses the competitor as weak is useless — reps need to know what they are actually up against.

**Where we win.** The specific scenarios, use cases, and buyer profiles where the vendor's product has a genuine, defensible advantage. Not feature laundry lists — specific situations where a head-to-head comparison favours the seller.

**Where they win.** An honest account of where the competitor has real strengths. Reps who pretend the competitor has no advantages lose credibility the moment the buyer pushes back. A battle card that acknowledges competitor strengths and reframes the conversation builds far more trust.

**Landmines.** The questions or framings the rep should proactively plant in the buyer's mind to shift evaluation criteria in their favour — before the competitor gets to set the agenda. "Have you asked them how they handle X?" is a landmine. Used well, landmines reshape the buyer's decision criteria without appearing manipulative.

**Trap questions to ask buyers.** Discovery questions that surface criteria the competitor struggles to meet. "How important is it that your team can see [MEDDPICC](https://meddpicc.net/) gap analysis at the deal level, not just call-by-call?" is a trap question if the competitor can't do that well.

**Objection handling.** The most common objections a rep will hear when a specific competitor is in the deal — and specific, tested responses. "They said Gong already does this" or "Apollo is cheaper" both need prepared, confident, non-defensive responses. [**Proof points**](https://dd.agency/strategy/positioning/proof-point)**.** Customer wins specifically against this competitor, relevant case study snippets, and any benchmark data that supports the competitive narrative.

## What Makes a Battle Card Actually Used

Most battle cards are created and never used. They sit in a Google Drive folder, updated once a year during competitive review season, irrelevant by the time a rep actually needs them.

The battle cards that get used have four characteristics:

**They are short.** A rep in a live deal will not read a ten-page competitive analysis. They will read one page. Two at a stretch. Every word has to earn its place.

**They are opinionated.** A battle card that presents both sides equally and draws no conclusions is a research document, not a sales tool. Reps need to know: what is the pitch? What is the argument? What do we lead with?

**They are current.** Battle cards that reflect a competitor's product from eighteen months ago are worse than no battle card — they give reps false confidence going into conversations where the competitive landscape has shifted.

**They are easy to find.** A battle card that requires three clicks through a sales enablement portal to locate is effectively inaccessible during a live call. The best organisations surface battle cards contextually — inside the [CRM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customer_relationship_management), triggered when a competitor is logged on an opportunity.

## Battle Cards and MEDDPICC

In MEDDPICC-driven sales organisations, battle cards have a specific relationship with the Decision Criteria and [Competition](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/sales-competition-why-matters-how-shapes-business-george-kamotho-uz93f) elements of qualification. Understanding the competitor in a deal is not optional — it is a MEDDPICC requirement.

The battle card informs how a rep navigates Decision Criteria: if the competitor is framing the evaluation around feature X, and the rep knows from the battle card that feature X is where they lose head-to-head, the rep needs to reframe the evaluation criteria before the buyer has fully adopted the competitor's frame. This is exactly what battle cards are built for.

The [Competition](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/sales-competition-why-matters-how-shapes-business-george-kamotho-uz93f) field in MEDDPICC is only meaningful if the rep knows not just who is in the deal but how the competitor is positioned, what they are claiming, and what the buyer is most likely to find appealing about them. A battle card turns the [Competition](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/sales-competition-why-matters-how-shapes-business-george-kamotho-uz93f) field from a name in a CRM dropdown into an actionable intelligence input.

## How AI Changes Battle Card Effectiveness

Static battle cards decay rapidly. Competitors release new features, change pricing, pivot messaging, and win or lose customers — and a battle card that was accurate six months ago may actively mislead a rep today.

AI platforms like Brazn can surface real-time competitive intelligence during deal preparation — pulling recent competitor news, product announcements, and customer reviews from sources like G2, LinkedIn, and company blogs to give reps a current picture of competitive positioning alongside the static battle card content. When a competitor announces a major new integration or raises a funding round that changes their market position, that context should be in the rep's hands before the next competitive call — not discovered three weeks later.

## The Bottom Line

A battle card is a sales enablement fundamental. Every rep who faces a competitive deal — which, in enterprise [SaaS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_as_a_service), is nearly every deal — should walk in knowing the competitive landscape clearly, knowing where to lead the conversation, and knowing exactly how to handle the most likely objections. A battle card built with those goals in mind, kept current, and surfaced at the right moment is one of the most direct levers a sales enablement function has on win rate.
