How to Qualify a Deal Using MEDDPICC

MEDDPICC is the qualification framework used by the world's highest-performing enterprise SaaS sales teams. It stands for Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain, Champion, and Competition. Each element represents a dimension of deal qualification — a specific piece of information that must be established before a deal can be considered genuinely qualified.

The power of MEDDPICC is in its completeness. Most qualification frameworks focus on a subset of what determines deal outcomes — the pain, the budget, the decision-maker. MEDDPICC covers all of them, and adds the dimensions that most frameworks miss: the specific process through which the decision gets made, the internal champion without whom the deal cannot advance, and the competitive context in which the evaluation is happening.

A deal that scores well against MEDDPICC is a deal the rep understands. A deal that scores poorly against MEDDPICC is a deal the rep is hoping will work out — and hope is not a forecast.

---

M — Metrics: Quantify the Business Impact

What it is: The quantified financial or operational impact of the problem. Why it matters: Without quantified metrics, there’s no business case; the purchase is discretionary. How to establish it: Confirm their actual baseline numbers and calculate impact.

---

E — Economic Buyer: Identify and Engage the Budget Owner

What it is: The person who can approve budget and make the “yes” stick. Why it matters: Deals that never reach the EB don’t close. How to establish it: Identify the EB by name/title and secure direct engagement.

---

D — Decision Criteria: Map What They're Evaluating Against

What it is: The explicit criteria the buying committee will use. Why it matters: You can’t influence criteria you don’t know. How to establish it: Ask for the scorecard and confirm weighting.

---

D — Decision Process: Map How the Decision Gets Made

What it is: The steps, owners, order, and durations from now to signature. Why it matters: Unmapped process = imaginary close date. How to establish it: Build a shared timeline including paper process.

---

I — Identify Pain: Establish the Specific, Acute Problem

What it is: Specific pain described in their words, confirmed at EB level, acute enough to act now. Qualification levels: Level 1 acknowledge, Level 2 impact, Level 3 quantified + EB confirmed.

---

C — Champion: Develop the Internal Advocate

What it is: A person with power + personal stake + willingness to advocate. Champion tests: inside info, EB access, surfacing objections, spending political capital, articulating business case without you.

---

C — Competition: Understand the Competitive Landscape

What it is: Who else is being evaluated and where you stand. Why it matters: No competitive context = surprise loss. How to establish it: Name competitors, identify their strengths, plan positioning.

---

The MEDDPICC Scoring Model

Score each element 0–2 (0 not established, 1 partial, 2 fully). Max 16; commit ≥ 12.
