10 Discovery Questions Every SaaS AE Should Ask

Discovery is where SaaS deals are won or quietly lost. A great demo can’t save a deal that started with shallow questions.

The goal of discovery is simple: understand whether there is a real problem, real urgency, real budget, and real ownership on the customer side — and whether your product is the best way to solve it.

Below are 10 core questions every SaaS AE should have in their toolkit, plus why they work and what to listen for.

---

1. “What problem were you hoping we could help you solve?”

This gets straight to the pain in the prospect’s own words rather than your assumptions about it.

Good answers are specific and measurable (“Our reps spend 6–8 hours a week updating Salesforce and still miss data”), not vague (“We want to be more efficient”).

---

2. “How are you handling this today?”

You need to understand the current process before you can position change.

Listen for manual workarounds, spreadsheets, shadow tools, or frustrated comments about the status quo — those are your leverage points when you later discuss impact and ROI.

---

3. “What happens if nothing changes in the next 6–12 months?”

This question surfaces the cost of inaction and real urgency.

If the answer is “Honestly, not much,” you’re not in a must-have category yet. If it’s “We’ll miss our new logo target again” or “My team will burn out,” you know you’re in important territory.

---

4. “Who else is involved in making this decision?”

You’re mapping Stakeholders and getting an early read on the decision process rather than discovering late that Procurement or a security council has veto power.

Follow up with “Who will actually use this day-to-day?” and “Who signs off on budget?” to distinguish users, champions, and the Economic Buyer.

---

5. “How will you decide whether this is a success six months after go-live?”

This connects your solution to concrete metrics and outcomes rather than features.

If they struggle to answer, co-create success criteria with them: reduced admin time, improved win rate, faster ramp, better forecast accuracy, or fewer slipped deals.

---

6. “What other priorities is this competing with right now?”

Every deal is competing for time, attention, and budget.

This question tells you how your project sits in the wider roadmap — and whether your champion will have the political capital to get it done this quarter.

---

7. “Have you tried to solve this before? What happened?”

Past attempts reveal both landmines and buying preferences.

If they say “We bought [competitor] and nobody used it,” that’s your cue to dig into change management, adoption, and what would need to be different this time.

---

8. “When you imagine rolling this out, what worries you?”

This invites objections early, when they’re easier to address.

You’ll hear concerns about integration, rep adoption, data quality, or security. Capture them and show later exactly how you de‑risk each one.

---

9. “If we moved forward, what would a realistic timeline look like from today to go-live?”

This aligns expectations and surfaces the real paper process: security review, legal, procurement, integration work, internal approvals.

Use their answer to build a mutual action plan rather than letting “we’re aiming for end of quarter” float unchallenged.

---

10. “Why now? Why not six months from now?”

If there’s no compelling “why now,” deals drift.

A strong answer ties back to a board target, a product launch, a funding milestone, or a painful internal KPI. A weak answer tells you you’re in a nice-to-have evaluation, not a must-have project.

How to Use These Questions in Live Calls

You don’t need to ask all 10 on every call. Instead:

- Start with 1–3 to understand pain and current state.

- Use 4–7 to qualify stakeholders, urgency, and fit.

- Use 8–10 to uncover risk and co‑design a realistic path to value.

Great discovery is less about reading from a checklist and more about following the thread — listening deeply, then using questions like these to go one or two levels deeper than your competitors.
